On Saturday, February 3 at 8:00 pm, Congregation Mishkan Israel offers a fun and engaging taste of Yiddish musical theatre with the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene. The traveling ensemble will perform Mama’s Loshn Kugel, a collection of classic Yiddish humor and theater songs.
The program offers local Jewish audiences a wonderful opportunity to see some of today’s most talented Yiddish theatre performers. Under the direction of Motl Didner (who also performs with the group), its seven members bring their “effervescent entertainment” (Time Out NY) to enthusiastic audiences hungry for the Yiddish stage.
“Folksbiene” means the “People’s Stage,” and the company preserves, promotes, and develops Yiddish theatre for current and future generation. Founded in 1915, the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene is the oldest continuously-producing Yiddish theatre company in the world. NYTF was a producer of the Tony Award-winning Broadway play Indecent, and has been the recipient of numerous Drama Desk nominations, Outer Critics Circle Award Nominations, Lucille Lortel Award Nominations, and other accolades. They’ve been hailed as “a magical example of musical theatre” (TheaterMania), “an incredible journey” (NY1), and “deeply satisfying” (The New York Times).
Doors open at 7:30 pm, and the concert begins at 8:00. Audiences should arrive early to get the best seats. The concert takes place at Congregation Mishkan Israel, located at 785 Ridge Road in Hamden. This is a family-friendly event.
