Tower One/Tower East presents a four part series in cooperation with Jewish Family Services of New Haven. This series is supported in part by a grant from the Women of Vision Society of the Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven.

The first session of the four part series – “Our Life Journeys” on January 6th @ 2pm, will be presented by Heni Schwartz, MSW, Jewish Family Services of New Haven, on the topic “Where We End Up in Life.”
Where we "end up in life" may be a far distance from where we began. Two stories come to my mind: The first - I grew up with parents who were immigrants, uneducated and, to some extent, illiterate; I would never have imagined that I and my children would become professionals and graduates of the some of the finest universities in this country. The other is that I worked at a summer camp in Connecticut when I was 17 years old. As I left the camp, on that last day, I turned back to the camp and wondered if I would ever again come to CT. Little did I know that I would spend the better part of my life in this state.

In some ways, time is our most valuable asset. Choosing how to spend one's time happens either consciously or unconsciously. Many young people spend their time texting or emailing from their phones or computers and very young kids often play games on their electronic devices. Some people like spending their time being with people while others may find comfort in watching programs on TV, or playing cards or bingo. I generally spend my time one of these four ways: with family, friends, at work or enjoying nature.

The second session of the four part series – “Our Life Journeys” on January 13th @ 2pm, will be presented by Rachel Scolnic Dobin, Social Worker, Jewish Family Services of New Haven, on the topic “Being a working Mother: Finding the Balance.”
Over the last almost seven years, I have had three beautiful and healthy kids and I have also got to experience working just for my kids, working full-time and working part-time. None of the options are necessarily easier then another each comes with heartache and lots and lots of juggling. But overall I know how fortunate I am, I have a job that is fulfilling and will not penalize me if I need to take care of a sick kid. I know many women are not as lucky. How can we as a community support all our moms?

The third session of the four part series – “Our Life Journeys” on February 10th @ 2pm, will be presented by Amy Rashba, LCSW, Jewish Family Services of New Haven, on the topic “Finding a Positive Attitude and an Affirming Resilience in Overcoming Illness.”
We all have had times in our lives when illness threatens our well-being. We are often left feeling like the rug has been pulled out from beneath us. Our bodies have betrayed us, our heads are spinning from scary medical terminology and we are asked to make crucial and hard choices too quickly.
Join Amy Rashba, LCSW, to talk about how to maintain a positive attitude and stay resilient when faced with illness. This interactive workshop will offer an opportunity to share our stories and gain strength from one another.
Spoiler Alert!! It may involve gentle chair yoga too!

The last session of the four part series – “Our Life Journeys” on February 17th @ 2pm, will be presented by Rabbi Hesch Sommer, Director of the Jewish Wellness and Healing Center, Jewish Family Services of New Haven, on the topic “How Our Sense of Self Changes Through Life Transitions.”
We see ourselves differently at various stages of our lives. Sometimes we wrestle with the changing sense of self and sometimes we embrace it (as a new beginning, as a feeling and redemptive moment in our lives). It is through an aware of the shifting sense of identity that we can hopeful feel a sense of fulfillment and purposefulness as we look back (and ahead) in our life’s journey.
