The 2024 Great American Solar Eclipse will be the last total eclipse visible from the continental United States until 2046. From Connecticut, about 93% of the sun will be blocked by the moon on April 8 at 3:26 PM. To enjoy this event to the fullest, you will want to understand what creates a Solar and Lunar eclipse, how to view it safely, and how to photograph it. You will also learn how to create a pinhole solar viewer that you and your family can make at home.

Dr. Ruben Kier’s first published photograph was of the 1973 Great African Eclipse, taken on an expedition with Isaac Asimov and Neal Armstrong. He went on to study Astronomy with Carl Sagan at Cornell. Since then, over 50 of his astronomical images and several of his articles have been published in Sky & Telescope and Astronomy magazines. His book, The 100 Best Astrophotography Targets, has been the world’s bestselling resource on photographing galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. Most of the photos in his book were taken from his observatory in the Berkshires. He has been an invited speaker around the country, including the Harvard Smithsonian and American Museum of Natural History. Dr. Kier has traveled the globe to photograph 6 solar eclipses. During the day, Dr. Kier teaches medical imaging at the University of Connecticut.
