Climbing Wall Instructor

General Function:

 

The Climbing Wall Instructors primary responsibility is to provide a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all users of the wall. The Climbing Wall Instructor will ensure an emphasis on educating users on safe and effective climbing practices. The Climbing Wall Instructor will serve in many ways as mentors by providing an atmosphere and environment that welcomes all climbers; beginner to expert. The Climbing Wall Instructor will possess at least a basic level of knowledge in climbing technique, equipment and theory, an outgoing and friendly personality, a commitment to learning and teaching, and the skills to support all types of climbers. Duties include setting up for open climb, climbing events and programs, cleaning up after operation of the Climbing Wall.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Arranging for substitutes in advance and in writing.
  • Assist with climbing wall orientations, climbing events, and outdoor education programming as needed.
  • Assure a safe environment by following the climbing wall rules, checking all harnesses, helmets, ropes, and belay devices each and every time to ensure their proper function.
  • Attending all Climbing Instructor meetings, required training and participating in branch events.
  • Belay members.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Reporting to scheduled shifts on time and in uniform, including your name badge, ready to work.
  • Responding promptly and appropriately to emergencies.
  • Set up/take down climbing wall equipment.
  • Teach adults and children the proper skills and techniques for climbing
  • This position is considered to have a supervisory or disciplinary relationship over minors.

Qualifications:

  • The Climbing Wall Instructor must possess the desire to help others in an inclusive and open environment that encourages safety, education, service, and fun.
  • Ability to belay a person of equal or somewhat greater weight
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to teach effective climbing techniques
  • Ability to work with people, communicate clearly and maintain a professional attitude
  • Ability to teach and monitor safe spotting techniques for bouldering
  • Ability to monitor individuals and small groups at the Climbing Wall
  • Climb twenty-five feet up, with some assistance
  • Spot members who are bouldering
  • Effective communication & organizational skills

The physical demands of the position include:

  • Visual and auditory ability to observe and to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds.

 

Schedule : 

 

15-20 hours per week, evenings and weekends
