Israel House Meeting the Need of over 130 Israeli Families in Greater New Haven

In January 2004, a core group of volunteers gathered to create an organization that would become a center for cultural and social life for Israelis in the Greater New Haven area.

Led by program co-founders Yaron Back, the Jewish Federation's Young Adult Division Director, and Ronny Siegal, then executive director of the JCC, the volunteers planned a kick-off event for Israel House (IH). The very successful family BBQ at Camp Laurelwood attracted seventy-five adults and children who attended enjoyed good food, swimming, a game of volleyball, and had the opportunity to meet other Israelis.

Israel House continued its programming on a monthly basis, with events of interest to both adults and children. Programs included a movie screening in October and a wonderful Chanukah party and a well-attended and fun pre-New Year dance party in December. In February, IH members enjoyed a jazz night at Café Atlantue in Milford.

Israel House also teamed with the JCC to sponsor a Purim party, a Model Matzah Factory, and Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha'Atzmaut celebrations.

In addition to monthly holiday and special events, yearlong programs were established.
Hebrew-speaking children gather monthly at the JCC for 'Sheat Sipor' (Hebrew story time). This volunteer run program includes stories and arts projects related to a chosen theme. The IH also initiated an on-going Hebrew book club.

Israel House's first year has been a great success. In the coming year, volunteers hope to expand its programs and attracting new members. Israel House thanks Orna Wiesner, Rachel Sutin, Eyal Sela, Keren Doron, Liora Lew, Merav Canaan and Netta Sharon for all of their efforts to make the Israel House a success in the last year.

Israel House is partially funded by the JCC, by admission fees, and on occasion, by advertising and sponsorships.
